The goal of meditation is to go beyond the mind and experience our essential nature—which is described as peace, happiness, and bliss. But as anyone who has tried to meditate knows, the mind itself is the biggest obstacle standing between ourselves and this awareness. … The mind has a mind of its own.

All the answers to what we seek lie within the calm center, which is the essence of our being. Through meditation we aim to experience this essence, which transcends our regular wordly experiences.

To this aim, harmony with nature is fundamental. The choicest places for meditation have always been places of natural abundance like woods, seashore where it is easier to be oblivious to the distractions and lose ourselves in the meditative state

What is meditation ?

Meditation is an ancient practice that helps to control our own mind and consequently our own life and discover ourselves.
Being aware of our self, to sit quietly and focus on your thoughts, being aware of our breathing are all part of meditation.

When we seek to quieten the distracted mind, the frequency of thoughts slow down and we become more conscious of the working of the mind itself. This gives the ability to separate the thoughts from the emotions associated with it. Focused mind can help to think better with more clarity.

The time spent in meditation is time spent for solely our own self, something that we have forgotten in our frenzied hectic lives.

How to meditate if our mind remains constantly distracted?
The alternative would be to focus on your breathing. We can practice deep breathing and other pranayama activities. The activeness of mind is linked with our breathing patterns. Deep breathing slows down the activities.
Is sitting cross legged on the floor compulsory ?
Sitting on the floor, using a mat or cushion is not compulsory but advisable. The basic point is to be comfortable but direct contact with ground should be avoided. However, cross legged position is good for natural energy flow of your body.
Is listening to Music helpful for meditation ?
In the beginning, listenening to Music is definitely helpful. Soft melodies like flute etc. helps in both calming the mind and focussing on one sound instead of the cacophony around. Eventually, nothing works better than absolute silence as we delve deeper into ourselves.
How long should the meditation session last?
It depends on our comfort levels. The idea is to enjoy the activity. Meditation is mindfulness, being aware of the activity that we are doing. Initially, the sessions can be as long as we want. As we become more advanced, atleast 45 minutes long sessions is preferable as the immediate effects are more clearly felt that way.
